Cape Coral Hurricanes First Tryout a HUGE Success!

Date:

Over 50 players attended inaugural team tryouts. February 11, 2012 - Cape Coral, FL The Cape Coral Hurricanes had their inaugural first round of open tryouts the weekend of Friday, Feb. 3 through Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012. They were held at Jim Jeffers Soccer Complex in Cape Coral, Florida. There were over 50 talented players that registered for the event and everyone had a great weekend. The players received a blue and white player jersey with the Hurricane logo and a number on the back, a black pair of shorts and a commemorative t-shirt that was sponsored by Terrasi Media. The players were also treated to Gatorade, bottled water, snacks and lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Aside from a few of the very talented players that were invited to attend, the coaching staff was pleasantly surprised with the amount of talented players that came directly from Southwest Florida. "This was a fantastic weekend and we were extremely pleased with the turnout and with the talent we saw", stated J.P. Terrasi, the team's General Manager. "We've seen some great players in the men's leagues down here but never anticipated this.” Examining the registrants showed that the tryout field was jam packed with soccer headliners from the past couple of local high school soccer seasons. "I don't think I would have gotten another opportunity like this if it weren't for this team," claimed Paola Acosta to a television reporter on Saturday. "This is going to give some of us a chance to follow our dreams of becoming a professional soccer player." There were a few cuts made from the large group but the ones remaining on Sunday were all invited back for the second tryout session that will take place in a couple weeks in Fort Myers. “We know that some guys that attended were only notified a few days before the weekend, so we wanted to make sure that everyone felt that they were given a fair look at their talents,” said Mick Whitewood, the team’s head coach. "There is no doubt that there is definitely a high degree of soccer talent in SW Florida, so we’re hoping this next final round of tryouts has even more talented players come out to show us what they have.” The coaching staff will eventually narrow the selection to 40 players, of those 26 will be named to the official starting roster and the remaining 14 players will be offered a spot on the reserve squad. “We know that at this level there are many changes throughout the season,” stated Terrasi, “with players moving on, going back to school and even getting hurt, so we are preparing for that contingency with the reserve squad.” The next and final round of tryouts that will be held in Fort Myers will be announced in the next few days after confirmation of the fields and times are made.
